Trevor King: One Last Stage & A Corner Full of Support

For Trevor King, the day meant stepping on stage for his last bodybuilding competition.

For those of us supporting from the sidelines, it involved a considerably less disciplined nutrition plan. Pringles and Energade. Repeat as necessary.

It was a long day. But when his category finally started? The energy made up for the wait.

I met Trevor through mutual friends, and when his mom, Tania, asked if I could photograph his final competition at the Shaye Best Classic, there was a personal reason to be there. This was a chapter closing, and she wanted it captured.

Before the Stage Lights

Backstage started with jokes. There was room for a laugh, a bit of conversation, and those moments where the person comes through before the competitor takes over.

Then, as his time drew closer, things got serious.

That shift is something I love being able to photograph. The smile between preparations, followed by the focus. Same person, different gear.

Number pinned. A few more preparations. Getting closer.

From behind the camera, there was plenty to notice. Hands fastening a number, light coming through the blinds, the contrast between a busy backstage room and someone concentrating on what came next.

You see the finished pose on stage. Being there beforehand gives you a little more of the story.

Number 38, With Quite a Following

Meanwhile, Trevor’s friends and family were there to support him, including his two daughters. The matching King’s Corner Coaching shirts made it fairly clear who everyone had come to see.

And once his category started, the waiting gave way to cheering.

There’s something about photographing from the crowd that I enjoy. You’re close to the reactions. An arm goes up, someone leans forward, and suddenly the foreground becomes part of the photograph.

Those silhouettes in some of these frames belong to the story too. Especially knowing his daughters were there, watching their dad on that stage.

Under the lights, the photographs took on a different feel. Strong shadows, colour, competitors lining up and moving through their poses. Plenty happening, and plenty of reasons to keep the camera up.

Trevor had his game face on. Somewhere on our side of the stage, the Pringles were finally getting a break.

A Corner Full of Support

When Trevor spoke about what made the day worthwhile, it was the people in his corner. His family, his friends, and his two daughters, there to cheer him through his final competition.

They’d made a day of it. The waiting, the snacks, the shouting when his category finally started. And for Trevor, having them there meant a lot.

That’s what I wanted these photographs to remember too. Trevor under the lights, giving it his all, and the familiar faces just beyond the stage, making sure he knew they were there.

A photograph can keep the result. It can also keep the faces around it.

And that group photograph afterwards? That belongs right alongside the stage shots. Everyone gathered around Trevor, matching shirts, smiles, his daughters there with him. The people he said made it worth it, all in one frame.
